Suchat Jangtanong
Suchat was born into a family of knife makers, he learned the trade by assisting his father and grandfather in the family’s knife crafting business, in the Uthai Thani province of Thailand. He learned machining and metal work at the technical school, after graduating he began training with a knife making team. Here he first became known for an ability to carve pearl.
In 1984, he opened his own shop. Combining the skills of his family with his education in metals, he continued the tradition of using only the most basic tools. He believes the beauty in knife making comes from having a true vision of the knife, and a feel for how to craft it. His reputation and work spread through all of Asia and much of Europe.
Suchat’s knives are evocative of myths and fables from imaginary lands, they feel both strange and familiar. They have patterns and motifs from natural forms and geometric shapes. The handles are precisely fitted and formed, the blades are etched and honed.
Suchat’s work was first displayed in the US in 2011, at the Antique Arms Show in Las Vegas, drawing a lot of attention and his first stateside resellers. Other shows followed, and he reached national attention after reviews and coverage in Blade Magazine. The recognition was due and deserved.
His knives feature exquisite designs and gorgeous handcrafted handles. Each knife is a completely unique piece of art. He uses a great deal of mosaic damascus by Robert Calcinore, he believes the mosaic radiates a boldness and brings his knives to life. His flip knives have a custom spring mechanism that he designed and developed.
Suchat continues to live and work in Thailand, he is a member of the elite Thita Knives crafting team. His work continues to demand attention among collectors and enthusiasts.
